Gunpowder has not been on the scene for too long and when my foodie friend suggested we go, on a hop, skip and jump we went. The restaurant classes itself as a home style Indian Restaurant and with dishes mentioning "maa's" and "auntie" it makes you feel like you are getting authentic treats. The dishes originate in Calcutta and with the friendly staff and relaxed vibe (a small unassuming venue), you feel chilled and this makes the food stand out.
Think of Gunpowder as Indian tapas. Sharing is important here and the friendly waiter recommended we order about three dishes per person and share. We went for the usual approach and ordered a bit at the beginning and more as we went on.
As lucky as I was to get a table, it was still too late for the Rabbit Pulao, which was one dish which stood out on the menu. This menu is quite brief but it is also a menu where you want to eat everything on it.
These dishes stood out for me and therefore were what we ordered:
- Maa's Kashmiri Lambchops
- Crispy Pork ribs with Tamarind Kachumber (onion tomato salad)
- Venison and Vermicelli doughnut
- Pulled Duck
- Okra Fries
The tapas style of the restaurant means that you cherish every bite. The dishes are smaller so it is important that you enjoy every bite and Gunpowder ensures that this is the case.
Whatever you see on this blog is the truth and is what you should eat. Do it and make sure you get there on time; you may have to wait a while otherwise. Be faster than a bullet (pun intended).
